    I think human nature is instinctively self preserving, either in a group sense or an individual sense, which is natural because we have a self preservation instinct built into us like the reflex to blink when something moves sharply near our face. This impulse to self preservation has the effect of putting us in conflict with any one who seems to threaten us. And defense becomes forward defense. So we become hostile to what we think threatens us. But beyond that, humans seem to be prone to self indulgence when we can get away with it, and in that we lose proper respect for the rights of others. We want something so we set out to get it, and take it from others if we can. Human conscience has to be shaped by things other than our own impulses. I should disclose that I’m a Christian and the Gospel teaches that human nature is prone to depravity because we want what we want and unless we see reason to do otherwise, we go after what we can get - and that has the effect of making us self-centred and avaricious, storing riches against a rainy day as the saying has it. That’s my view. Humans are not naturally inclined to think of others as important as ourselves. It comes back to the need for our own self preservation, and often, I believe, a lack of faith in any thing but ourselves and our allies to provide for us. Pride comes into it, too. Obviously people vary enormously, from saintly figures like Florence Nightingale to evil monsters like the proverbial ‘black widow’ poisoning a succession of husbands. Or Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin contrasted with Francis of Assisi or Albert Schweitzer and Father Damian. But human nature in its natural state is prone to all the blindness and fear that comes from only seeing what we can from our own perspective, and having to act accordingly.

    Most of the time, we don’t give people second chances. We judge them by their actions or our assumptions. You’ll find yourself shunning people out or looking down on them. You should stop doing this.

    The person you were ten years ago is not the person you are today. The same applies to other people. Don’t judge people. We all have a past. Some people have the best intention. And they want to change. Leave peoples’ past behind and avoid binging it up all the time. People need chances
